Transition Tips: Interviewing

Are you in the Intelligence Community, and need advice about transitioning to the private sector? We’re here to help! In our series #fbiaiatransitiontips our members share the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Our next tip:

When you reach the interview stage in the private sector, be prepared for a different experience compared to government interviews. Each company has its own unique style. For example, major tech companies often use a structured “loop” process, involving several interviews designed to assess various competencies. Some may include a case study.

Preparation is key:

Research the company: Spend time understanding their values, principles, and priorities. This will help you align your answers with their culture and goals.

Use the STAR method: Familiarize yourself with the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to clearly articulate your role and impact.

Highlight your contributions: Focus on leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration, detailing your specific contributions.

Prepare examples: Have multiple examples ready that showcase your skills and achievements.
